The artisan's story
Lynne, in her own words
I am a 30-year-old single mother of two. I am currently serving a sentence in prison. I worked on this cross-stitch pattern of a zebra. The project paid me well enough to take care of my children's secondary school educational needs.
In this project, I have been able to avoid immoral and illegal activities by focusing on cross-stitching. I am very grateful to the programme for having a heart for reaching out to women across the country, more so in prisons.
The Wild Kingdom
Celebrating Africa's majestic wildlife, The Wild Kingdom captures the strength, beauty and symbolism of the animals that define the African landscape. Each piece reflects themes of resilience, leadership and harmony within nature.
Suits Lodges, safari resorts, corporate boardrooms and private collectors of African heritage art.
How it was made
Five stages, weeks or months of work
Every piece represents weeks or months of meticulous hand embroidery. Each acquisition contributes to sustainable livelihoods while preserving indigenous craftsmanship.
Image and blueprint
An image is selected and converted into a coded blueprint: a chart that gives every square of the design its colour.
Guided stitching
Working from the blueprint, the artisan matches each code to its colour-coded thread.
Hand stitching
Trained artisans stitch the piece square by square and row by row, keeping the tension even across thousands of crosses.
Washing and finishing
The finished fabric is washed and prepared so that the work lies smooth and square.
Professional framing
Framing preserves the textile and presents it as a finished work, ready to hang.
